CS:GO goes free to play: Danger Zone and the December 2018 update

On December 6, 2018 CS:GO went free to play and launched Danger Zone, its battle royale mode. What changed for Prime, drops and existing players, and what happened to the mode later.

On December 6, 2018, Valve made two big changes to CS:GO in one update. The game became free to play, and it gained Danger Zone, a battle royale mode built on Counter-Strike's gunplay. The same update split the player base into Prime and non-Prime accounts, gave long-time players a badge, and added a case and a Souvenir skin that only Prime players could earn.

What shipped on December 6, 2018

Valve's announcement, "Welcome to the Danger Zone", and the release notes for that day list the pieces:

ChangeWhat Valve said
Free to play"CS:GO is now free to play", with every game mode and matchmaking open to new players
Danger ZoneA battle royale mode, played solo or in squads of two or three
Prime for existing players"All current CS:GO Players have been upgraded to Prime Status"
Loyalty BadgeA commemorative badge for everyone who had played before the update
Danger Zone Case17 community-designed finishes, with the Horizon knives as rare special items
Souvenir MP5-SD, Lab RatsPrime players could earn one by gaining 250 XP in Danger Zone, until January 9, 2019

Before this, CS:GO had cost money to own. Prime itself was older: Valve began testing Prime matchmaking for phone-verified accounts in April 2016, and from June 2016 an account also needed to reach Rank 21. What changed in December 2018 was that the base game cost nothing and Prime became an upgrade on top of it.

How Danger Zone played

Valve's Danger Zone page set out the mode. Matches took place on Blacksite, a large map built for it, with 16 players when queuing solo and up to 18 in squads. Rounds typically lasted about ten minutes.

  • Your tablet was your shop. You found cash around the map, in safes and from rescuing hostages, then ordered weapons and gear that arrived by drone.
  • Guns behaved as usual. Valve said weapons had the same damage as in other modes, but players could have up to 120 health, so they survived fights that would otherwise kill them.
  • The map closed in. PC Gamer's launch report described a map divided into hexagonal zones, random airstrikes and scarce ammunition, even on bought weapons.
  • Your skins came along. Weapon finishes from your inventory showed up in Danger Zone too.

The mode kept growing after launch. According to the Counter-Strike Wiki, Sirocco joined Blacksite in 2019, community-made maps such as Ember and Vineyard rotated in later, and Danger Zone got its own skill groups in July 2019.

What free to play meant for Prime and drops

The free-to-play FAQ that came with the update drew the new line. New players got "access to all game modes, matchmaking, and a limited set of item drops and weapon cases". Prime players were matched with other Prime players and were "eligible for Prime-exclusive souvenir items, item drops, and weapon cases".

There were two ways to get Prime. You could reach Rank 21 by earning XP and add an eligible phone number, or buy the Prime Status Upgrade, which Eurogamer reported cost $14.99. Existing owners got it free, along with the Loyalty Badge. PC Gamer summed up the effect: in every mode, CS:GO now split players into Prime and non-Prime matchmaking.

For players who already owned the game, little changed day to day. The FAQ said they would keep receiving drops and weapon cases "from the same drop lists, some of which are Prime-exclusive". The two new rewards in this update, the Danger Zone Case and the Lab Rats Souvenir, were among the Prime-only ones.

June 2021: the free path to Prime closes

The free tier didn't last in its 2018 form. On June 3, 2021, Valve said the free benefits had "become an incentive for bad actors". From that day, non-Prime accounts no longer earned XP, ranks, Skill Groups or item drops, and could no longer reach Prime by playing. They were limited to a new Unranked mode for Competitive, Wingman and Danger Zone. Buying the upgrade became the only way into Prime, and CS2 kept Prime as a paid upgrade when it replaced CS:GO. Our CS2 launch article covers that switch.

What happened to Danger Zone

Danger Zone didn't make the move to CS2. HLTV's list of CS:GO features missing at CS2's launch in September 2023 included it, along with the War Games modes, and noted that Valve had said nothing about bringing it back. Valve still hadn't announced a return by October 2026. For what remains of CS:GO itself, see our article on the CS:GO legacy version.

The items outlived the mode. Valve's promise that players could bring their entire CS:GO inventory into CS2 covered the Danger Zone Case, its Horizon knives, the Lab Rats Souvenirs and the Loyalty Badge. For how cases reach players today, see our guide to weekly drops and drop pools. The history of CS2 weapon cases puts the Danger Zone Case in the wider timeline.
