The CS2 player count is one of the most quoted numbers on Steam, and one of the easiest to misread. Counter-Strike 2 took over CS:GO's place on Steam, so its chart is one continuous record that goes back to CS:GO's launch in August 2012. Below are the concurrent player records with the date and source behind each, and what the figure does and doesn't measure.
How Steam counts concurrent players
A concurrent player count is the number of accounts in the game at one moment. Steam reports it for every game through its Web API, and Valve's own Most Played chart in the Steam store lists the top 100 games with their current players and the day's peak. Trackers read the same number and keep the history that Valve's chart doesn't.
How often a tracker checks matters. Steam Charts queries the API once an hour and has done so since July 2012. SteamDB updates the most played games every five minutes, and says Steam itself caches the count for about that long. A short spike between two hourly checks never reaches Steam Charts, which is why its all-time peak for CS2 (1,818,368, in March 2025) is lower than SteamDB's (1,862,531). Neither is wrong, so when someone quotes a record, ask which tracker it came from.
CS2 is still Steam app 730, the app CS:GO was released under on 21 August 2012, according to SteamDB. A CS:GO player count chart and a CS2 chart are the same chart.
CS:GO player count records, 2012 to 2023
CS:GO started small. Steam Charts gives its launch month, August 2012, an average of 15,475 players and a peak of 52,261; our article on the CS:GO launch in 2012 covers that slow first year. Growth came later, and an hourly peak of 850,485 set in April 2016 stood on Steam Charts until February 2020.
On 14 March 2020, CS:GO passed one million concurrent players for the first time, peaking at 1,007,062 at about 14:20 GMT, PC Gamer reported. Valve marked it with a post reading "Thanks a million." PC Gamer linked the run of records to evening hours in the Chinese time zone, while millions of people stayed home because of the coronavirus. By April, Steam Charts' hourly peak had reached 1,305,714, a mark it didn't beat until February 2023.
The next jump followed Valve's announcement of Counter-Strike 2 in March 2023. CS:GO hit 1,519,457 that month, and on 7 May 2023 PC Gamer reported that SteamDB had recorded 1,818,773, almost 300,000 more. PC Gamer put a large part of the rise down to the last CS:GO Major in Paris, which began on 8 May with Valve's usual Pick'Em challenge and new team stickers. The price side of that spring is covered in our article on the March 2023 market boom.

That was the high point of the CS:GO era. On Steam Charts, May 2023's hourly peak of 1,802,853 wasn't beaten by any later month before CS2 launched, and the month holds a record CS2 hasn't matched: the highest monthly average on the chart, 1,117,517. It was the first month the average passed one million.
CS2 player count records since 2023
CS2 left its test phase and replaced CS:GO on Steam on 27 September 2023. By the time PC Gamer published its launch story that day, the game had peaked at 1,265,615; our CS2 launch article lists what shipped. The average then fell to 792,125 in October 2023, its first full month, per Steam Charts, and the CS:GO peaks stood for another year and a half.
They fell in spring 2025. Steam Charts' hourly figures put CS2 at 1,818,368 in March 2025, past CS:GO's best of 1,802,853 on the same chart. SteamDB caught a higher spike: 1,862,531 concurrent players on 12 April 2025, still listed as the all-time peak when read on 27 October 2026.
2026 began strongly and then cooled. CS2's best monthly average on Steam Charts is February 2026's 1,084,095, and the highest peak of the year was 1,717,624 in March. The average then fell every month from March to September, when it reached 805,638, the lowest since February 2024. September's peak, 1,450,705, was the highest since June.

Bots, idle accounts and what the number can't tell you
Steam's figure counts accounts in the game, and nothing in it separates a person from an account left idle or run by a script. PCGamesN describes accounts that sit in lobbies AFK or with a bot playing them, to farm the cases that drop while you play, a system our guide to weekly drops and drop pools explains. As early as 2023, PC Gamer noted that cynics put CS:GO's records down to bots.
Valve has acted against them. In March 2026, CS2 project lead Ido Magal wrote that Valve had banned 960,000 farming bot accounts in a single day, PCGamesN reported. Neither Valve nor the trackers publish how many of the accounts in the game at a given moment are bots, so no record can be split into people and automation.
The count also says nothing about modes, regions or how many matches are running. It's one number for the whole game, idle Deathmatch accounts and Premier players alike.

How to check the CS2 player count yourself
For the figure right now, open the Steam store and go to Charts, then Most Played. Valve's list shows current players and the day's peak. For history, SteamDB and Steam Charts both keep CS2's chart under app 730; Steam Charts shows monthly averages and peaks back to July 2012 without signing in.
Whatever you quote, keep the date and the tracker with it. "1,862,531 on 12 April 2025, per SteamDB" will still be true next year. "1.8 million players" on its own won't be.
