CS2 Service Medals and XP: profile ranks, the weekly bonus and XP Overload

How to earn each year's CS2 Service Medal: who gets XP, the 40 profile ranks, the weekly XP bonus and reduced XP, XP Overload and the weekly care package.

XP is the progress bar behind three CS2 rewards: your profile rank, the weekly care package and the Service Medal you can earn each year. Only Prime accounts earn it, and the rate falls sharply once you've had a big week. Here is how XP is paid, how the weekly bonus and XP Overload work, and what reaching Global General gets you.

Who earns XP in CS2

You need Prime Status. Steam Support's Prime FAQ says that without it "you will not receive XP from any game mode on any server", and the same page makes Prime a condition for Service Medals and weekly care packages. CS2 Prime Status explained covers what Prime costs and what else it changes.

XP is paid at the end of a match on official Valve servers. Competitive and Premier multiply your rounds won, while modes such as Casual and Deathmatch multiply your score. Community testing puts Competitive and Premier at 30 XP per round won before any bonus. Abandon a Competitive or Premier match and you get no XP for it.

Valve also retunes modes without giving numbers: its May 2026 notes only say it adjusted the XP limits in Deathmatch and Arms Race. Treat any per-mode XP table as approximate.

Some XP comes from outside the match result. The weekly mission rewards XP when you complete it and expires after seven days, as the May 2025 update that added it describes. Uplink Terminals have a Collection Catalog XP panel that pays bonus XP for viewing the offers in a collection. With an active Armory Pass, XP earned on official servers also counts towards Armory Credits, covered in the Armory explainer.

Profile ranks from Recruit to Global General

There are 40 profile ranks and each takes 5,000 XP, so the climb from Recruit at Rank 1 to Global General at Rank 40 is 39 rank-ups, or 195,000 XP. The titles come in bands:

RanksTitle
1Recruit
2–4Private
5–8Corporal
9–12Sergeant
13–16Master Sergeant
17–20Sergeant Major
21–24Lieutenant
25–28Captain
29–32Major
33–35Colonel
36Brigadier General
37Major General
38Lieutenant General
39General
40Global General

Profile rank measures XP, not skill, and it's separate from Skill Groups and CS Rating. It does gate Premier, though, which opens only at Profile Level 10. Rank can also be taken away. Valve's CS2 launch notes say that when party members are convicted of cheating and permanently banned, "all their associates will be penalized with loss of Profile Rank and CS Rating".

The weekly XP bonus, reduced XP and XP Overload

Each week starts with an XP bonus boost. Community testing describes it as a 5,000 XP pool that first quadruples what you earn, then doubles it, until you reach about 7,500 XP for the week. After that you earn at the normal rate.

The normal rate lasts until 11,166 XP, the figure Valve gave when it added XP Overload in February 2024. Past that point the game shows "Reduced 'Earned XP' gain until next week", and testers put the reduced rate at 0.175 times normal: 5.25 XP per round won in Competitive instead of 30. The profile tooltip shows when the reduction expires. The week rolls over on Tuesday evening, Pacific time, which is early Wednesday in Europe.

XP Overload marks that state. Valve gives it to players "who have earned all of their normal XP during the week (11,166 XP) and reached reduced XP gain", shows it next to your name in places like the scoreboard and main menu, and keeps it for at least a week. Reaching it in consecutive weeks earns higher tiers, and the tooltip counts your streak in weeks. Valve hasn't said how many tiers there are.

In practice, the boost makes the first rank-up of the week the quickest, and that rank-up is all the care package needs. Past 11,166 XP, extra hours add very little XP.

The weekly care package

Your first rank-up of each weekly cycle earns the care package: four random rewards, of which you claim two. CS2 weekly drops explained covers what the options can be. A package you don't claim before the reset is lost, and since June 2026 the game shows an error if your inventory is full when you try to redeem, so clear space first.

Since the September 22, 2026 update, the package can also offer a chicken egg, the start of CS2's pet chickens. The patch notes didn't mention it, and Valve's first reference to pets came in an October 5 note about pet photobook pages. Players report that the egg takes both of your picks for the week, hatches into a chick after about a week and only grows if you feed it, with feed that also comes from care packages.

How to get the CS2 Service Medal

When you reach Global General, the game offers a Get Service Medal button. Taking it resets your Profile Rank and earns that year's Service Medal, or upgrades it if you already have one. Valve's announcement of the 2026 Service Medal gave January 1, 2026 as its start date. The medal is a display item for your profile, and like XP itself it needs Prime.

Each year's medal has six levels, one per climb to Global General, a pattern that has held since 2018 (the 2017 medal had seven). Service Medals can't be traded or sold, so the only way to own one is to earn it.

Six levels mean six climbs of 195,000 XP. At the full 11,166 XP of normal weekly XP, one climb takes about 17 to 18 weeks, so a player who uses up the normal XP every week reaches Global General about three times a year, before counting any reduced-rate XP.

The rank doesn't reset at New Year, and the medal you get is the one for the year in which you claim it. If you reach Global General late in December, the game tells you how many hours to wait if you'd rather have next year's medal, which turns a late climb into an early start on the new year's levels.

Premier Season medals are a separate system, earned with Premier wins rather than XP. The in-game tooltip asks for "an account in good standing, 25 Premier match wins, and an active CS Rating at the end of the season."

XP farming and bans

Because XP leads to drops, some accounts farm it with bots. The Steam Subscriber Agreement, last updated in September 2026, bans scripts, bots and macros used for "Faking gameplay statistics (e.g., inflated wins or losses, XP, playtime)" or "Earning rewards or progress without genuine user input", and lets Valve restrict or terminate accounts that do it.

Farming accounts do get banned, and in bulk. In March 2026, CS2 project lead Ido Magal said Valve had banned 960,000 farming bot accounts in one day. Many of them received game bans, which shut an account out of CS2, rather than VAC bans.
