CS2 Wingman ranks: how the 2v2 mode works, its maps and Skill Groups

CS2 Wingman ranks explained: what Wingman is in CS2, the 2v2 rules and round count, the seven maps, the 10-win Skill Group and why it needs Prime.

CS2 Wingman ranks use the same 18 Skill Groups as Competitive, from Silver I to The Global Elite, but you hold a single one for the whole mode instead of one per map. It appears after 10 Wingman wins and, like every Skill Group, only on a Prime account. Here is how the 2v2 mode works in October 2026, which maps it uses and how the rank behaves.

What is Wingman in CS2

Wingman is Counter-Strike's 2v2 mode. Two pairs play bomb defusal on a cut-down version of a map with a single bombsite, and the game describes it as a full match "in compact maps with short round times." Friendly fire and team collision are on, and you buy weapons, armor and defuse kits with the money you earn each round, as in the 5v5 modes.

The mode began as a weekly event in 2017, as our Operation Hydra article recounts. When the operation ended on November 13, 2017, Valve kept Wingman, let players pick individual maps, and gave everyone "a Wingman skill group that will be used exclusively when matchmaking in Wingman." CS2 tested the mode during its 2023 Limited Test, and the launch-day patch on September 27, 2023 enabled Wingman matchmaking for everyone.

Wingman rules and round count

The rules come from the mode's settings file, which ships with the game. Most numbers are smaller than in Competitive, so rounds and matches move faster:

SettingWingmanCompetitive
Players2v25v5
Rounds16 at most, 8 per half; first to 9 wins24 at most; first to 13 wins
OvertimeNoneNone
Round time1:301:55
Freeze time10 seconds15 seconds
Buy time20 seconds20 seconds
Starting money$800$800
Money cap$8,000$16,000
Loss bonus$2,000, then $300 more per loss in a row$1,400, then $500 more per loss in a row

A round won by eliminating the other pair, or by running down the clock as the Counter-Terrorists, pays the winning team $2,750. A round won by the bomb exploding or being defused pays $3,000, and Terrorists who lose a round after planting get an extra $600. Each pair also has one technical timeout of up to two minutes. Our CS2 economy guide explains how these rules work in the 5v5 modes.

CS2 Wingman ranks and how they work

Wingman uses the same 18 rank names as Competitive, listed in order in our CS:GO ranks guide, with its own version of each emblem. The difference is scope. Competitive gives you a separate Skill Group for every map, while Wingman gives you one, earned on whichever Wingman maps you play.

It also takes longer to appear. A script in the game's interface sets the wins needed before a rank shows: 2 for a Competitive map and 10 for any other Skill Group, which covers Wingman. Until you get there, the game tells you how many more wins you need to establish your Wingman Skill Group.

The rank can lapse too. If you stop playing, the game marks your Wingman Skill Group as expired "due to inactivity" and asks for one win to show it again; the Counter-Strike Wiki puts the gap at 28 days. Valve hasn't published how much a Wingman win or loss moves the rank. When it expired every per-map group on January 21, 2026, its notes named only Competitive.

Wingman maps in October 2026

The Wingman map group in the game files lists seven maps: Inferno, Nuke, Overpass and Vertigo from Valve, plus the community maps Poseidon, Debris and El Dorado. Vertigo's Wingman matches have used its A site since May 23, 2024, when Valve reworked that site and moved the Wingman layout to it.

Community maps have rotated through Wingman in pairs since June 2024:

October 1, 2025Rooftop, TransitDogtown, Brewery

Transit had the shortest run: Valve took it out of official matchmaking on October 3, 2025, two days after adding it. Poseidon survived the July 2026 rotation and received a map update in August.

Prime, parties and penalties

Anyone can play Wingman: Valve's Prime FAQ says free accounts get every mode except Premier. The rank is another matter. Since June 2021, free accounts in Wingman have played skill-based matches without earning a Skill Group, and Valve's FAQ lists Skill Groups among the things only Prime accounts receive.

A team is two players, so you queue alone or with one friend. Mixing account types has a cost. If a Prime player queues with a non-Prime friend, Valve treats the lobby as non-Prime, and both play with and against non-Prime accounts. Our game modes guide compares Wingman with the other queues if you're deciding where to spend your time.

Wingman also has Competitive's penalties, according to the Counter-Strike Wiki. Abandoning a match, failing to reconnect in time or being removed for idling can earn a cooldown, which Valve's support page says keeps you off its servers for a set period and can't be removed by Steam Support.
