CS2 game modes explained: Premier, Competitive, Wingman, Retakes and Rush

Every Counter-Strike 2 game mode as of October 2026, from Premier and Competitive to Wingman, Retakes and the new 3v3 Rush, with team sizes, round rules and what each mode is for.

Counter-Strike 2 has eight modes you can queue for in October 2026: two ranked 5v5 modes, Premier and Competitive, plus Wingman, Casual, Deathmatch, Arms Race, Retakes and Rush, the 3v3 mode added in September 2026. They differ in team size, match length and how much is at stake. This guide covers the rules of each one and when it is worth queueing.

Player counts come from the game's own mode file, which lists 10 players for Competitive, 4 for Wingman, 20 for Casual, 16 for Deathmatch and Arms Race, 7 for Retakes and 6 for Rush.

Premier

Premier is the main ranked mode and the one closest to professional play. You need Prime status, and the Counter-Strike Wiki says your profile must also reach rank 10. After 10 wins in a season you get a CS Rating, a visible number that puts you on leaderboards.

Matches use the Active Duty map pool, which since July 2026 has been Ancient, Anubis, Cache, Dust II, Inferno, Mirage and Nuke, as our Season Five article explains. The way the map is chosen changed on September 22, 2026. Teams used to ban maps down to one; now team one picks a map, team two picks two, team one picks a fourth, and the game draws one of the four at random. Our Rush Hour article covers the reasoning.

Halves are 12 rounds, so 13 wins takes the match. At 12-12 there is a single overtime of six rounds, three on each side. The wiki notes that both teams get $10,000 at the start of each overtime half and that a 15-15 score ends the match as a draw. Freeze time at the start of each round is 20 seconds, longer than in Competitive.

Competitive

Competitive uses the same 5v5 bomb defusal rules but lets you choose which maps to queue for. That makes it the place to learn a map before it counts in Premier. The map list in the game files includes the Active Duty maps plus Train, Vertigo and Overpass, the community maps Boulder, Fachwerk and Shelter, and the hostage maps Office and Italy.

Your rank is a Skill Group, from Silver I to Global Elite, and since CS2 each map has its own. Rounds last 1 minute 55 seconds, the bomb timer is 40 seconds, and there is no overtime: 12-12 ends as a draw. Money starts at $800 with a $16,000 cap, as in Premier; our CS2 economy guide explains the rest.

Wingman

Wingman is 2v2 on one bombsite of a cut-down map. It started as an event in Operation Hydra in 2017 and became permanent later that year. Halves are 8 rounds, so 9 wins takes it, rounds last 90 seconds and the money cap is $8,000. It has a single Skill Group across all maps.

The current list is Inferno, Nuke, Overpass and Vertigo plus three community maps: Poseidon from January 2026, and Debris and El Dorado from July 2026.

Casual

Casual is drop-in, drop-out play for up to 20 players. Matches go to 8 round wins out of 15, with no halftime swap. Everyone spawns with Kevlar and a helmet, CTs get a defuse kit, and the mode's settings scale team damage to zero. You start with $1,000, the cap is $10,000 and kill rewards are halved. It is a low-pressure way to learn maps or try a new skin.

Deathmatch

Deathmatch is pure aim practice. In CS2 it is free-for-all only, so everyone else is a target. You respawn within seconds, pick any weapon from the buy menu at no cost and score points per kill, with different weapons worth different amounts. Valve last adjusted those values on May 7, 2026. A match is one 10-minute round.

Arms Race

Arms Race returned on February 6, 2024, after missing the CS2 launch, with the maps Baggage and Shoots; Pool Day and a night version of Shoots are now in the rotation too. Valve's notes summed it up: get two kills with each weapon to move up, steal an opponent's progress with your knife or the Zeus, and win with a kill at the knife stage. There is no money and no buy menu; you respawn with the weapon for your current level.

Retakes

Retakes became an official mode on October 22, 2025. Every round starts after the plant: three Terrorists defend a bomb that is already down while four Counter-Terrorists try to defuse it. There is no money. Instead you pick a loadout card each round, and the first team to 8 wins takes the match. Online it uses the Defusal Group Alpha and Delta maps, and since October 23, 2025 parties of up to four can queue together. Our October 2025 article covers its launch.

Wingman began in Operation Hydra in 2017, and both Premier and Retakes first appeared in Operation Broken Fang in December 2020

Rush

Rush arrived on September 22, 2026 as a queued 3v3 mode. You fight through a chain of small arenas, chosen at random each match, towards the other team's Castle. You win a round by controlling the tower once the enemy team is eliminated or time runs out, and the match is decided by capturing the opposing Castle.

The Counter-Strike Wiki fills in the details: there are seven arenas, rounds last up to 40 seconds, or a minute for a Castle, and a team that wins eight rounds also takes the match. You buy with a small budget that starts at $800. Rush has no rank yet, only a friends leaderboard.

Practice and community servers

Outside the queues you can play offline against bots, load Workshop maps, create private lobbies and join community servers running their own rules. Some CS:GO modes are still missing, among them Danger Zone, the battle royale, and Demolition. For how the current modes arrived over time, see the CS2 update history.
