StatTrak history: from the 2013 Arms Deal update to CS2

How StatTrak began with the Arms Deal update in August 2013, how the counter works, when knives, music kits and the Swap Tool came in, and what changed for StatTrak in CS2.

StatTrak is the orange-labelled version of a skin that counts what you do with it: kills on a weapon, MVPs on a music kit. It arrived with the Arms Deal update in August 2013, and the core idea has hardly changed since. What has changed is where StatTrak can come from, how a count can be moved, and how the counter looks on CS2's new models.

If you want the side-by-side comparison with Souvenir items, our StatTrak vs Souvenir guide covers it. This article is the timeline.

August 2013: StatTrak arrives with Arms Deal

The Arms Deal update of August 14, 2013 is where CS:GO's item economy began. Valve's release notes added ten weapon collections, the first weapon cases and timed drops, and made the new items tradable and sellable on the Steam Community Market. One line introduced the new quality: weapon cases "have a chance to contain new knives and StatTrak weapons, which track all player kills with that weapon."

Valve's Arms Deal page put the source plainly: StatTrak weapons were "available exclusively through case drops". That rule still shapes the market. Map collections and other drop-only sets have no StatTrak versions, and the Counter-Strike Wiki notes that vanilla guns can't be StatTrak either, although vanilla knives can.

The idea wasn't new for Valve. The Wiki traces StatTrak to Team Fortress 2's Strange quality and Dota 2's Inscribed items, which also count statistics on cosmetic items.

How the counter works

On a gun, StatTrak is a small orange display fitted to the weapon. On a knife, the count is etched into the blade. Each item's inventory description says it "tracks certain statistics when equipped by its owner", and only the owner's kills count.

Three rules from the CS:GO years still matter when you trade:

  • The count belongs to the owner. According to the Counter-Strike Wiki, team kills and bot kills don't count, and the display shows an error if someone else picks the weapon up.
  • Changing hands resets it. Trading a StatTrak item sets the counter back to zero. In the CS:GO era even listing an item on the Market and cancelling did the same, which players were already asking about on the Steam forums in January 2014.
  • The display has six digits. The Wiki notes that the counter rolls over after 999,999 kills on the weapon itself, while the real total stays visible in the inventory.

2015: trade-ups and the Swap Tool

For its first year and a half, a StatTrak item was stuck with its own count, and StatTrak skins couldn't go into trade-up contracts. Valve's notes for March 31, 2015, the same update that ended Operation Vanguard and put Train into Active Duty, changed both:

  • "Trade up contracts work on StatTrak weapons." All ten inputs have to be StatTrak, and the result is StatTrak too.
  • "There is now a StatTrak swap tool available for purchase. It swaps the StatTrak value between two of the same weapon."

The Swap Tool made a long count portable. If you upgrade from one StatTrak AK-47 to another, you can carry the old count across instead of starting again. Our guide to Name Tags, Storage Units and other tools explains how it works in practice.

Music kits start counting MVPs

Music kits came first, on October 10, 2014, as a way to replace the game's music and play your own MVP anthem. StatTrak followed on September 24, 2015, when Valve began selling kits "that track your Official Competitive MVPs". Every new kit was also offered in a normal version, so the StatTrak label was a choice rather than the only option.

On November 28, 2016, the Brothers In Arms update added the Radicals Box, a box in which every kit is StatTrak. Valve listed seven artists: Beartooth, Blitz Kids, Hundredth, Neck Deep, Roam, Twin Atlantic and Skog. The same update introduced the Glove Case, and gloves have no StatTrak versions.

CS2 kept the pattern. New kits still come in standard and StatTrak versions, from the Masterminds 2 box in August 2024 to the NIGHTMODE II kits in May 2026.

What changed in CS2

StatTrak items came across with the rest of the inventory when CS2 replaced CS:GO in September 2023. The changes came around them.

New models, new positions. CS2 gave every stock weapon a high-resolution model, and the StatTrak module had to find a place on each one. In the Limited Test notes of August 15, 2023, Valve "unified StatTrak position on both CS2 M4 models to not occlude stickers". Placement fixes have kept coming since, such as a September 17, 2025 patch that moved the StatTrak module on the Shadow Daggers. Our article on what changed for skins in CS2 covers the wider move to new models.

A new route to StatTrak knives. Until October 2025, a StatTrak knife came only from a case. Valve's notes of October 22, 2025 extended trade-ups so that "5 StatTrak™ Covert items can be exchanged for one StatTrak™ Knife from a collection of one of the items provided". Regular Coverts can return a knife or gloves; StatTrak Coverts can only return a knife. The Covert trade-up article has the details and the market reaction.

Swap Tools stopped being tradable. On November 12, 2025, Valve made newly purchased Name Tags and StatTrak Swap Tools impossible to trade or list on the Market. A tool you buy now is for your own items only.

What this means when you buy StatTrak

The count on a StatTrak item you buy resets the moment it reaches you, so you are paying for the StatTrak label, not anyone's kills. StatTrak and normal copies of the same skin are separate items with separate prices, and the StatTrak filter on Buy keeps them apart when you search. If a high count matters to you, the Swap Tool is how you move one between two of your own weapons.
