Operation Riptide (2021): the Riptide Case, Gamma knives and short matches

Operation Riptide, the last CS:GO operation, ran from September 2021 to February 2022. It added short matches, private queues, droppable grenades and a case with Gamma knives.

Operation Riptide was CS:GO's eleventh and last operation, running from September 21, 2021 to February 21, 2022. Alongside the usual rewards it changed how the game itself was played, adding short competitive matches, private queues, new deathmatch modes and droppable grenades. Its case brought Gamma finishes to five knife models, and four new map collections arrived through the star shop. The operations overview explains how it fits in the series.

Dates and the pass

Riptide launched on September 21, 2021. Valve's operation page said it would last until February 20, 2022, with new mission cards for the first 16 weeks; Dexerto worked that out as 152 days. Valve's post closing the operation is dated February 21, 2022, and unspent stars could be redeemed until March 27.

The pass cost $14.99, according to Dexerto and the Counter-Strike Wiki, the same as the previous two operations. Valve's FAQ listed an upgradable coin (silver at 33 stars, gold at 66, diamond at 100) and access to the rewards: agents, weapon collections, stickers, cases, patches and XP boosts.

One rule was new. To play missions at all you needed either Prime Status or the pass, and only pass holders could claim rewards.

Missions and the star shop

Riptide kept Broken Fang's star shop: you earned stars from weekly mission cards and spent them on whichever rewards you wanted. Valve's page said the missions had been overhauled, with three new types:

  • Checklists, such as scavenger hunts and graffiti missions, completed in any order.
  • Races through a series of checkpoints in order.
  • Missions with a challenge condition that let you finish faster.

The shop offered new agents from the Guerrilla Warfare Terrorists, the SEAL Frogmen and the French Gendarmerie, the Operation Riptide Case, four weapon collections, two sticker collections (Operation Riptide and Riptide Surf Shop) and a set of Operation Riptide patches. The agents and patches guide covers the agents and patches in more depth.

Gameplay changes

Valve's release notes and operation page listed changes that reached every player, pass or not:

ChangeWhat it did
Private queuesA shared Queue Code, or a Steam Group's own code, started a private Premier match on Valve servers
Short CompetitiveA preference for best-of-16 matches, which Valve said last about 25 minutes, alongside the usual best-of-30
Deathmatch optionsClassic, Team Deathmatch (first team to 100 kills) and Free-for-All
Droppable grenadesGrenades could be dropped like weapons in most modes
Weapon balanceMore M4A1-S body damage, less Desert Eagle body damage, and Dual Berettas cut to $300
Death camVision after death cut from 3 to 2 seconds
Riot ShieldA heavy weapon for CTs on casual hostage maps

Demolition got fewer rounds and no half-time swap, and Arms Race gave a health shot after three kills. Valve also blocked the view of mid from T spawn on Dust II.

Droppable grenades drew particular debate. HLTV collected reactions from professionals and analysts, some of whom worried about a change that large arriving just before the Major qualifiers.

Maps

Five community maps came with the operation: Basalt for bomb defusal, Insertion II for hostage rescue, Ravine and Extraction for Wingman, and County for Danger Zone. All five were removed from their map pools when Riptide ended.

The Operation Riptide Case

Valve described "17 community-designed weapon finishes" with Gamma Doppler knives as rare special items.

Gamma finishes on the 2014–2016 knives

The rare special items are the five knives introduced between 2014 and 2016: the Butterfly, Bowie, Falchion and Huntsman knives and the Shadow Daggers. Each comes in six Gamma finishes (Gamma Doppler, Lore, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Bright Water and Freehand), 30 knives in all. These models had previously had their original finishes and, from 2017, Chroma finishes in the Spectrum cases; Gamma finishes had until then been limited to the original five knives from 2013.

Gamma Doppler comes in four numbered phases plus Emerald, the solid-green version. The Doppler phases guide explains how they work, and the phase filter on Buy can narrow listings to one phase.

Four map collections

The shop's weapon collections were named after four maps: Train, which had left the Active Duty pool that May, Mirage, Dust II and Vertigo.

The Glock-18 | Gamma Doppler is the only gun finish with Doppler-style phases, Emerald included.

What Riptide changed

The modes stayed. Valve's closing post said "all of the game modes introduced in Riptide will live on, including short competitive matches and free-for-all deathmatch."

The operations stopped. Riptide was the last operation. CS2 replaced CS:GO in September 2023 and has had none since; its closest equivalent is the Armory pass, explained in the Armory article.

Another route to the knives. For years, opening the case was the only way to get a new Gamma knife on these models. Since October 2025, five Covert skins in a trade-up can return a knife or gloves from the collection of one of the inputs, as the Covert trade-up article describes.
