eSports 2013, 2013 Winter and 2014 Summer cases: skins, knives and prize pools

The three eSports cases from 2013 and 2014: every skin by grade, the original knife pool, float caps, and what Valve actually said about key sales funding CS:GO prize pools.

Between August 2013 and July 2014 Valve released three eSports cases, all opened with the same eSports Key. They held their own sets of finishes plus the original five knives, and Valve tied part of the key money to tournament prize pools. Here is what each case contains, and what Valve did and did not say about where the money went.

Three cases in eleven months

The eSports 2013 Case launched with the Arms Deal update on August 14, 2013, the same day as the first CS:GO Weapon Case. The eSports 2013 Winter Case took its place as the current eSports case on December 18, 2013, in the Winter Offensive update. The eSports 2014 Summer Case followed on July 10, 2014, while Operation Breakout was running, and at 17 skins it is the largest of the three.

The game files tie all three cases to a single eSports Key, whose description says it "opens any eSports Case".

What Valve said about prize pools

Valve's Arms Deal announcement introduced the idea in one line: "A portion of the proceeds from sales of eSports Case Keys will go towards prize purses at CS:GO community competitive events." Each case's in-game description repeats the promise, saying a portion of the proceeds from its key will help support professional tournament prize pools. The key's own description is narrower: the money would go towards "one of the established community-run CS:GO tournaments."

Two press releases put numbers on it:

  • September 16, 2013: Valve announced a $250,000 "community-funded" prize pool for The 2013 DreamHack SteelSeries CS:GO Championship. It said a portion of the sales revenue from Arms Deal items was placed into a tournament prize fund, designed to help fuel prize pools at other events too.
  • December 19, 2013: the same wording came back for the $250,000 prize pool of the 2014 EMS One Katowice CS:GO Championship, and Valve said the community would then have funded two events.

Note what the releases do and don't say. They describe the fund as fed by Arms Deal item sales in general rather than naming eSports keys alone, and none of them gives the share of a key's price that went into the fund, the total raised or how much of each $250,000 came from keys. Treat any precise figure you see elsewhere with caution. The events themselves are covered in our articles on DreamHack Winter 2013 and EMS One Katowice 2014.

The knives

The rare special item is the same in all three: the Bayonet, Flip Knife, Gut Knife, Karambit or M9 Bayonet, either plain or in one of the 12 original finishes such as Fade, Case Hardened, Crimson Web and Slaughter. That is 65 possible knives, and the game files show the eSports cases share this pool with the three Arms Deal cases.

Skins worth knowing

  • P90 | Death by Kitty. The 2013 case's only Covert has a float range of 0.08 to 0.32, so it only exists as Minimal Wear or Field-Tested.
  • AWP | BOOM. Capped at 0.28, it comes in Factory New, Minimal Wear and Field-Tested only.
  • Red and Blue Laminate. The AK-47 got a Classified laminate in the first case and a Restricted blue one in the Winter case, which is capped at 0.40.
  • M4A4 | X-Ray. The Winter case's Covert stops at 0.30, so there is no Well-Worn or Battle-Scarred copy.
  • Corticera twins. The 2014 Summer case put the same finish on the AWP and the P2000, both limited to 0.00 to 0.30.

StatTrak and the cases today

Every gun and knife in these cases has a StatTrak version, and the game files list a StatTrak copy of the knife pool for each case.

None of the three is in the current weekly drop pool, and community drop trackers have logged no rare-pool drops at all since December 2025, as Hotspawn reported at the time. Valve has not commented. The supply of each case now only shrinks as people open them.

Since October 22, 2025, five Covert skins can be traded up into a knife from the collection of one of those skins. The P90 | Death by Kitty, M4A4 | X-Ray, M4A4 | Bullet Rain and AK-47 | Jaguar therefore all lead to the original five knives, and five StatTrak Coverts return a StatTrak knife. Our trade-up guide covers the rules.
