Searching for a Steam Support email address leads nowhere official, because Valve doesn't take help requests by email. Every request, from a refund to a stolen account, goes through the Steam Support site at help.steampowered.com. Valve also tells you to ignore any message claiming to be Steam Support that doesn't come from that domain.
Is there a Steam Support email address?
Not one you can write to for help. Valve's own answer to "How do I contact Steam Support?" is a single instruction: visit the help site, pick the option closest to your problem, and the site either guides you to fix it yourself or lets you send a help request to the Support team. For anything about your account, Valve says the help site is the only way to speak with a Steam Support agent, and that there's no situation in which you'd need to reach a Valve or Steam employee directly.
Steam does send email. Valve's Steam Guard help asks you to add [email protected] and [email protected] to your trusted senders so sign-in codes don't land in spam. Those are the addresses Steam's messages come from; Valve's contact instructions don't mention writing to them.
There's no phone line either. SlashGear reported in December 2019 that Valve's phone system answered a Steam question with a recorded message saying "Steam does not offer phone support for any of our products," followed by the help site's address. Treat any "Steam Support number" you find listed elsewhere with suspicion.
How to contact Steam Support
- Go to
help.steampowered.comand sign in. The contact form says you'll get the best support if you're logged in before you submit. - Pick a topic. The home page offers Purchases; Games, Software, etc.; My Account; Trading, Gifting, Market and Steam Points; Steam Hardware; and Help, I can't sign in.
- Narrow it down to your exact problem. Depending on the issue, the site shows a self-service fix or a form to send a help request.
- Describe the problem in as much detail as you can. Screenshots can be attached from the Steam client or an up-to-date browser.
- If you aren't signed in, give your email address and enter the code Steam sends to it. The form warns that the Support team won't receive your message until you enter that code.
Valve said in 2017 that contacting support no longer requires a separate account.
Locked out or hijacked
If you can't sign in, start with Help, I can't sign in. Valve's recovery page says to try self-recovery first; if that fails, Steam Support "will verify the account is yours and recover it for you." It asks for as much as you can provide of:
- proof that you own the account
- any login names the account may have used
- any email addresses used on it
Valve stresses that you can always contact Support for recovery, even if someone has changed the account's email, password and phone number. When the recovery search asks for an email address, give your own, not the one a hijacker may have set.
If Steam emails you about a password change, an email change or a Steam Guard code request you didn't make, the lock link inside that email restricts purchases, gifting, trading, CD key activation, Community access and play on VAC-enabled servers. Valve says those links are the only way to lock an account. Write down the unlock code you're given; it lifts the lock once the account is secure. Our guide to recovering a hijacked Steam account covers proof of ownership and what Valve will and won't restore.

Refunds go through the same site
A refund doesn't need a separate contact. Sign in to the help site, choose Purchases, select the purchase and the problem, then click "I'd like to request a refund" and pick your Steam Wallet or the original payment method. Valve refunds a title requested within 14 days of purchase and played for under two hours, and says it will still look at requests that fall outside those rules. You get one email when the request is submitted and another when it's processed. How this works for Prime, keys and Armory Passes is in our guide to Steam refunds for CS2 purchases.
How long Steam Support takes to reply
Valve publishes its own numbers. In May 2017 it launched a Steam Support Stats page, saying it then received around 75,000 help requests a day. Each "typical" time on the page is the window in which 90% or more of a category's requests get a response. On 27 October 2026 the page listed:
| Request category | Typical response time |
|---|---|
| Refund requests | 50 minutes to 1 hour and 34.7 minutes |
| Purchase and billing support | 2.3 to 12.9 hours |
| Game and Steam technical support | 9.3 hours to 1 day and 4.7 hours |
| Account security and recovery | 13.7 to 23.5 hours |
The page shows the date it was last updated, so check the current figures there if a reply seems slow. The same page also charts how many requests are waiting for a response.
Fake Steam Support: how to tell
Real Steam Support never starts the conversation in a chat app. Valve says its employees never communicate with you about your account through any chat system, Steam Chat and Discord included. Its security page adds that Steam Support doesn't use the Friends network to contact anyone and won't ask for CD keys or card details unless you contacted it first through the help site.
Some versions use malware instead of a message: your library looks blocked and an alert tells you to talk to an agent. Valve says a genuine Steam Support alert points to help.steampowered.com, and any alert sending you to Steam Chat, Discord, email or anywhere else is fake. The most common script, a friend who "accidentally reported" you and passes you to a fake admin, is taken apart in our article on the fake report scam.
If a scammer already controls your account, don't pay them. Valve says you can recover the account through the help site at any time, and that claims you can't because the details were changed are part of the scam. Once you're back in, our account security checklist covers locking it down.
