The Classic Knife brought the blade from the original Counter-Strike back as an item in 2019, and its plain version is one of the vanilla knives, the unpainted versions every knife model has. This guide covers the Classic Knife first, then explains how vanilla knives work across all 20 models.
The Classic Knife
The Classic Knife was added on October 18, 2019 in the CS20 Case, released during the CS20 event. The case's 17 community-made weapon skins all have a Counter-Strike theme, and the Classic Knife is its only rare special item.
The Counter-Strike Wiki says the knife is modelled after the one in earlier Counter-Strike games, which in turn was based on the Badlands Bowie by Mick Strider. Valve's description gives it an over-the-top spec sheet: a press-fit Stellite edge held by titanium on the blade's cheek and spine, and a handle of "fossilized mastodon ivory" in a carbon fibre pocket. The wiki also notes that references to its view model textures had already been removed from the game files in the July 2014 Operation Breakout update, five years before the knife was released.
Animations
Hotspawn describes most of its animations as standard, with two exceptions. A rare inspect throws the knife into the air before catching it, and the idle animation taps the blade impatiently against your hand, as the knife did in Counter-Strike 1.6. Valve fixed issues with the Classic Knife's inspect animations in an August 26, 2025 update.
Finishes and how to get one
The Classic Knife comes in 13 versions: vanilla, Blue Steel, Boreal Forest, Case Hardened, Crimson Web, Fade, Forest DDPAT, Night Stripe, Safari Mesh, Scorched, Slaughter, Stained and Urban Masked. All 13 exist in StatTrak. It has no Chroma or Gamma finishes, so there is no Doppler, Marble Fade or Lore Classic Knife, and like the other models released since 2018 it uses Night Stripe rather than Night.
There are two ways to get one. You can open a CS20 Case, the only case that contains it. Or, since October 2025, you can use a Covert trade-up: Hotspawn's trade-up guide notes that only two Covert skins qualify, the AWP | Wildfire and FAMAS | Commemoration, both from the CS20 Case. Our Covert trade-up article explains the rules.

What a vanilla knife is
Every one of the 20 knife models has a vanilla version: the knife as modelled, with no finish applied. On the Steam Community Market it appears under the model name alone, such as ★ Karambit, and where a skin would show a wear tier, the listing says "Exterior: Not Painted". With no paint to scratch, there is no Factory New or Battle-Scarred to choose between.
Vanilla knives are still rare special items, marked with the ★, and they are not the same thing as the default CT and T knives every player carries. The Counter-Strike Wiki's StatTrak entry draws the line clearly: vanilla knives can be StatTrak, the default knife cannot.
Where vanilla knives come from
Vanilla belongs to each model's original finish set, the one that launched with it. Hotspawn's list of Karambit cases, for example, puts the vanilla Karambit in the 11 cases with original finishes and not in the Chroma or Gamma cases, and its trade-up guide includes a vanilla version in every original-finish pool.
| Models | Cases with the original set, including vanilla |
|---|---|
| Bayonet, Flip, Gut, Karambit, M9 Bayonet | 11 cases from 2013 to 2015, from the CS:GO Weapon Case to the Revolver Case |
| Huntsman Knife | Huntsman Weapon Case |
| Butterfly Knife | Operation Breakout Weapon Case |
| Falchion Knife | Falchion Case |
| Shadow Daggers | Shadow Case |
| Bowie Knife | Operation Wildfire Case |
| Navaja, Stiletto, Talon, Ursus | Horizon Case, Danger Zone Case |
| Nomad, Paracord, Skeleton, Survival | Shattered Web Case, Fracture Case |
| Classic Knife | CS20 Case |
| Kukri Knife | Kilowatt Case, Gallery Case |
That means Coverts from these cases can return a vanilla knife in a trade-up. The same trade-up guide also lists vanilla versions in the Prisma and Fever pools, which the Counter-Strike Wiki's case pages don't show. The client game files don't include knife lists to settle it, so treat those two as unconfirmed. Our guides to the Karambit, Butterfly Knife and Horizon knives cover the individual cases.

StatTrak on vanilla knives
The Counter-Strike Wiki states that StatTrak is not available on vanilla guns, but it is available on vanilla knives. The Steam Community Market confirms it: listings for ★ StatTrak™ Karambit show a "Not Painted" exterior alongside a confirmed-kills counter.
As with any StatTrak item, the counter tracks kills made by the item's owner. Our StatTrak and Souvenir guide explains how the counter behaves when an item changes hands.
Buying a vanilla knife
Because there is no wear tier, the things that separate vanilla copies are the model and whether it is StatTrak. Phase, fade and blue percentage filters don't apply, since there is no finish to measure. When you inspect one, check the name for the ★ and, if you want a counter, the StatTrak tag.
On CS2Sell, the weapon and StatTrak filters on Buy are the quickest way to see vanilla versions of a model side by side.
