Best cases to open in CS2: how to choose by knives, gloves and finishes

The best cases to open in CS2 depend on what is inside: which cases have Butterfly knives, gloves or Doppler finishes, which still drop, and what the odds mean.

The best cases to open in CS2 are the ones whose rare items you actually want, because no case pays on average. Every keyed case uses the same published odds, a knife or gloves turns up about once in 391 openings, and studies of the market have found that most of what comes out is worth less than the cost of opening. What separates one case from another is what's inside it, and whether it still drops.

Every case has the same odds, and opening loses value on average

Perfect World, which runs CS2 in China, publishes one set of odds for every case that needs a key: 79.923% Mil-Spec, 15.985% Restricted, 3.197% Classified, 0.639% Covert and 0.256% for a knife or gloves, with every item in a grade equally likely. Our guide to CS2 case odds has the full tables. No case is luckier than another; only the list of items changes.

Two analyses put a number on what that means for your money. In June 2019, Fandom priced the items in the then-new Danger Zone Case from market sales and found that a case plus a key returned 59% of its cost on average, or 87.3% if the case had been a free drop. Seven months later both figures were below 50%. Fandom added that other cases may differ. A 2020 study in Nature Human Behaviour went wider: across about 751 million Steam Market sales of the most-traded CS:GO and Dota 2 items and every PUBG item, around 93% were for less than $2.49, the price of opening one loot box.

So the useful comparison between cases is what they contain, not what they pay.

Best cases for knives: match the case to the knife

Each knife case pairs a group of knife models with one family of finishes: the 2013 originals such as Fade, Case Hardened and Crimson Web, the Chroma finishes such as Doppler, Marble Fade and Tiger Tooth, or the Gamma finishes such as Gamma Doppler and Lore. The Counter-Strike Wiki's case pages give these pools:

The width of the pool matters too. When a case holds four or five knife models, the 0.256% is spread across all of them and all their finishes, so any one model comes out less often than in a case that holds only that knife.

What cases have Butterfly knives

Five, according to Hotspawn's May 2026 guide, and the wiki's case pages agree. The Operation Breakout Weapon Case holds only Butterflies, in 13 original finishes. The Spectrum Case and Spectrum 2 Case hold it in six Chroma finishes, including Doppler, and the Operation Riptide Case and Dreams & Nightmares Case in six Gamma finishes, including Gamma Doppler and Lore. In those four the Butterfly shares the slot with the Huntsman, Falchion, Bowie and Shadow Daggers. Hotspawn noted that no new Butterfly case had appeared since Dreams & Nightmares in 2022. Our Butterfly Knife guide lists every finish.

Best cases for gloves

Gloves fill the rare slot in seven cases, which share three sets of 24 designs: the Glove Case and Operation Hydra Case; the Clutch Case and Revolution Case; and the Operation Broken Fang Case, Snakebite Case and Recoil Case. Our gloves guide maps which glove types sit in which set. Since March 11, 2026 there is an eighth source: Valve's Dead Hand Terminal, whose rare special items are 22 all-new gloves.

Which cases still drop

Most of the cases above no longer arrive as weekly drops. Hotspawn reported in December 2025 that Valve had silently removed the older rare cases from the drop pool, and that no new case had been released since the Fever Case in March 2025. The Dead Hand Terminal, by contrast, arrived as a weekly drop, according to Valve's release notes. Our drop pool guide lists the containers that drop-tracking communities still saw in October 2026.

That changes where a case comes from, not its odds. A case that still drops keeps getting new copies every week; one that doesn't exists only in the copies already in inventories, and every opening removes one.

Choosing, in short

  • Start from the rare item. Decide which knife model, finish family or glove set you'd want, then find the cases that hold it.
  • Read the rest of the list. Mil-Spec and Restricted skins make up about 96% of openings, so those are what you will mostly receive.
  • Compare with buying outright. Fandom's conclusion in 2019 was that if you want a specific skin, buying it directly is the better route. On CS2Sell, Buy filters by weapon, collection, Doppler phase and float range.
