The Dreams & Nightmares Case was built entirely from a Valve art contest. Valve offered $100,000 each for ten dream or nightmare-themed weapon finishes, liked the entries enough to pick 17, and shipped them in January 2022 alongside five knives in Gamma finishes. In 2026 it is also one of only three cases still in the weekly drop pool.
How the contest worked
Valve announced the "$1 Million Dreams & Nightmares Workshop Contest" on July 21, 2021. Anyone with a non-limited Steam account could enter, alone or as a team, by submitting an original dream or nightmare-themed weapon finish to the CS:GO Workshop. The contest rules page added a few details:
- The window. Entries were open from July 22 to October 21, 2021.
- The weapons were fixed in advance. Valve listed which gun went in which rarity tier, from the AK-47 and MP9 at Covert down to seven Mil-Spec slots.
- Originality checks. Entrants were asked to keep their sketches, mood boards and concept art so the team could confirm the work was original.
- Rights. The FAQ said artists kept the rights to their work and gave Valve a non-exclusive licence to use it.
- A one-off payment. Each $100,000 prize was split among the contributors according to their Workshop revenue shares, and the rules called it "complete compensation in lieu of any payment under Workshop Supplemental Terms". In other words, the winners took a fixed prize instead of the ongoing share of sales that Workshop artists normally receive.
On November 21, 2021 Valve announced the result. It had received more than 15,000 entries and "decided that ten winners wouldn't be enough", so it picked 17, raising the total to $1.7 million. That post said the winning designs came from 24 artists, 14 of them new to the Workshop; Valve's January post about the case gave the figure as 23.
Released in January 2022
The case shipped on January 20, 2022. Valve's post described it as 17 finishes "selected from the CS:GO Steam Workshop as part of the Dreams & Nightmares contest", with "the Gamma Knives from the Operation Riptide case as rare special items", available both as an in-game drop and on the Steam Community Market.
One detail shows the case grew along with the winner list: the contest page had laid out 16 weapon slots, and the finished case has a 17th, a Dual Berettas finish in the Classified tier.
Contents by rarity
The Counter-Strike Wiki and the game's item data agree on the 17 skins.
| Rarity | Count | Skins |
|---|---|---|
| Covert (red) | 2 | AK-47 Nightwish, MP9 Starlight Protector |
| Classified (pink) | 3 | Dual Berettas Melondrama, FAMAS Rapid Eye Movement, MP7 Abyssal Apparition |
| Restricted (purple) | 5 | G3SG1 Dream Glade, M4A1-S Night Terror, PP-Bizon Space Cat, USP-S Ticket to Hell, XM1014 Zombie Offensive |
| Mil-Spec (blue) | 7 | Five-SeveN Scrawl, MAC-10 Ensnared, MAG-7 Foresight, MP5-SD Necro Jr., P2000 Lifted Spirits, Sawed-Off Spirit Board, SCAR-20 Poultrygeist |
| Rare special item (gold) | 50 | Five knife models, ten versions each |
Every gun skin and every knife can also come as StatTrak.
AK-47 | Nightwish is the case's headline skin and uses the full 0.00 to 1.00 float range. MP9 | Starlight Protector made history of its own: according to the Counter-Strike Wiki it was the first MP9 skin at Covert grade, and the game's item data still lists no other. Further down, names such as SCAR-20 | Poultrygeist and Sawed-Off | Spirit Board show how literally many artists took the brief.

The Gamma knife pool
The case reuses the knife pool of the Operation Riptide Case from September 2021: the Butterfly, Bowie, Falchion, Huntsman and Shadow Daggers in Gamma finishes. Each knife comes in ten versions, with no plain blade:
- Gamma Doppler in five variants: Phase 1 to 4 and the rare Emerald.
- Lore, Autotronic, Black Laminate, Bright Water and Freehand.
That is 50 knives in all, identical to the Riptide set, so a Butterfly Knife | Lore from either case is the same item. Our guide to Doppler phases explains how Gamma Doppler phases and the Emerald differ, and the knife guide compares the five models.

Where the case stands in 2026
The Dreams & Nightmares Case is still in the weekly drop pool. Techaeris counted it among the five containers that remained after older cases stopped dropping in December 2025, and it stayed when the Dead Hand Terminal replaced the Recoil Case in March 2026. As of October 2026, community drop trackers list it in the active pool alongside the Revolution and Kilowatt cases and the Genesis and Dead Hand terminals. Valve doesn't publish the drop odds, so treat any percentage you see as an estimate. Our guide to weekly drops explains how the pool works.
That makes it unusual among cases of its age: new copies still arrive every week, which keeps its contents in steady supply. If you would rather pick a specific knife than open cases, the Doppler phase, finish and float filters on Buy let you compare all five models.
