The Danger Zone Case arrived on December 6, 2018, the day CS:GO became free to play and gained a battle royale mode of the same name. Its 17 community skins include the AK-47 | Asiimov and AWP | Neo-Noir, and its knives are the four Horizon models from earlier that year, which made it the second case to carry them. The mode is gone, but the case and its skins are still very much part of the game.
The update it came with
Valve's post for that day, "Welcome to the Danger Zone", covered three changes at once. CS:GO was now free to play. Everyone who had played before the update received a Loyalty Badge for their profile and was upgraded to Prime Status. And there was a new game mode: Danger Zone, described by Valve as "a fast-paced battle royale game mode built on CS:GO's tactical gameplay".
Valve's Danger Zone page set out how it worked. Matches took place on a map called Blacksite, with 16 players if you queued solo and up to 18 in squads of two or three. You looted cash and equipment, ordered gear by drone through a personal tablet that also tracked the closing danger zone, and could have up to 120 health. Matches typically lasted about ten minutes.
The case was tied to Prime. Valve said Prime Status would give access to the new case and to a Souvenir MP5-SD | Lab Rats, which Prime players earned by collecting 250 XP in Danger Zone before January 9, 2019.
Contents by rarity
The Counter-Strike Wiki and the game's item data list the same 17 finishes, in the standard seven, five, three and two split.
| Rarity | Count | Skins |
|---|---|---|
| Covert (red) | 2 | AK-47 Asiimov, AWP Neo-Noir |
| Classified (pink) | 3 | Desert Eagle Mecha Industries, MP5-SD Phosphor, UMP-45 Momentum |
| Restricted (purple) | 5 | G3SG1 Scavenger, Galil AR Signal, MAC-10 Pipe Down, P250 Nevermore, USP-S Flashback |
| Mil-Spec (blue) | 7 | Glock-18 Oxide Blaze, M4A4 Magnesium, MP9 Modest Threat, Nova Wood Fired, Sawed-Off Black Sand, SG 553 Danger Close, Tec-9 Fubar |
| Rare special item (gold) | 52 | Navaja, Stiletto, Talon and Ursus knives, 13 versions each |
Every gun skin and every knife can also come as StatTrak, with a kill counter fitted to the weapon.
The Horizon knives, a second time
Valve's notes describe the special items simply as "the Horizon Knives". The pool is identical to the Horizon Case from August 2018: the Navaja, Stiletto, Talon and Ursus knives, each as a plain blade plus 12 classic finishes, from Case Hardened, Fade, Crimson Web and Slaughter to camouflage patterns such as Boreal Forest and Urban Masked. That is 52 knives in all, with no Doppler or Marble Fade among them.
So the two cases are interchangeable as far as knives go: a Talon Knife | Fade from either one is the same item under the same name. The four models had to wait for the Prisma cases to get Chroma finishes such as Doppler.

Standout skins and float caps
AK-47 | Asiimov. The headline Covert joined a line of Asiimov skins that began with the M4A4 | Asiimov in the 2013 Winter Offensive case and already included AWP and P90 versions. Its float range is unusually narrow, 0.05 to 0.70, so no copy can be cleaner than 0.05. Factory New examples sit in the thin band from 0.05 to 0.07.
AWP | Neo-Noir. The second Covert is capped at 0.50. Battle-Scarred starts at 0.45, so even its most worn copies stay near the clean edge of that tier.
The Classified tier. The Desert Eagle | Mecha Industries tops out at 0.60 and the UMP-45 | Momentum at 0.50, while the MP5-SD | Phosphor runs to 0.80.
Caps further down. The P250 | Nevermore stops at 0.40, so it never reaches Battle-Scarred at all. At the other end, the Tec-9 | Fubar starts at 0.14: there is no Factory New version, and Minimal Wear only exists between 0.14 and 0.15. Our float guide explains where each tier begins.

What happened to Danger Zone
The mode never made it into Counter-Strike 2. When CS2 replaced CS:GO in September 2023, Danger Zone was not part of it. In April 2025, Dust2.us reported that the dataminer GabeFollower had found Valve removing the mode rather than porting it, which matched what caster Chad "SPUNJ" Burchill had said he heard around the Shanghai Major.
The items survived the mode. Skins and cases carried over to CS2 with the rest of players' inventories, so the Danger Zone Case and its knives are as usable as any other.
Where the case stands in 2026
The case no longer drops. Hotspawn reported that rare-pool cases stopped dropping altogether in December 2025, without any word from Valve, and Techaeris found that by January 2026 only five containers remained in the weekly pool, none of them the Danger Zone Case. Drop trackers still showed it as discontinued in October 2026, so the number of unopened cases can only go down. For how drops work now, see our guide to weekly drops and drop pools.
