The AWP | Dragon Lore has never been inside a weapon case. Every copy came from a short list of sources, a 2014 map collection, three operations, ten Major souvenir packages and trade-up contracts, and all of them except trade-ups had closed by 2018. That history explains much of why it is often the first skin people name when they talk about rare Counter-Strike items.
A map collection, not a case
The Dragon Lore arrived on July 1, 2014 with Operation Breakout. Pass holders who completed missions were rewarded with finishes from three new map collections: Baggage, Cobblestone and Overpass. The Dragon Lore was the Covert, the top rarity grade, of the Cobblestone Collection, named after the map of the same name.
Its in-game description is short: the AWP "has been custom painted with a knotwork dragon," and the flavour text jokes that even 200 keys would not reveal its secrets. It exists in every condition from Factory New to Battle-Scarred, with floats running from 0.00 to 0.70.
The Cobblestone Collection is small at the top. It has one Covert, the Dragon Lore, and one Classified, the M4A1-S | Knight. That detail matters for trade-ups, covered below.
Where every Dragon Lore came from
| Source | When |
|---|---|
| Operation Breakout mission rewards | July–October 2014 |
| Operation drops for pass holders in Bloodhound, Wildfire and Hydra | 2015–2017 |
| Cobblestone souvenir packages at Majors | ESL One Cologne 2014 to ELEAGUE Boston 2018 |
| Trade-up contracts | Since 2014, still open |
The operation drops came from a fixed list of collections that included Cobblestone, and Valve's announcements for Bloodhound, Wildfire and Hydra all name it. No later operation used that list.
Souvenir packages were the other source. During a Major, viewers could receive a package tied to the map being played, and a Cobblestone package could contain a Souvenir Dragon Lore with gold stickers from that match already applied. Ten Cobblestone packages exist, one per Major from ESL One Cologne 2014 to ELEAGUE Boston 2018. On April 20, 2018, Valve took Cobblestone out of the Active Duty map pool and put Dust II back in, so the FACEIT London Major later that year had no Cobblestone package.

That leaves trade-ups. A trade-up contract takes ten skins of one rarity and returns one skin of the next rarity from the collection of one of the inputs. Because Cobblestone's only Classified is the Knight and its only Covert is the Dragon Lore, ten Knights can only produce a Dragon Lore, while mixing Knights with other collections' Classifieds gives only a partial chance. A guaranteed Dragon Lore therefore consumes ten Knights.
The souvenirs and the $61,000 sale
Souvenir Dragon Lores carry an extra layer of interest, because each one is tied to a specific Major match through its gold stickers. The clearest early example came in January 2018. The day after Cloud9 won the ELEAGUE Boston Major, a Factory New Souvenir Dragon Lore carrying the gold autograph of Tyler "Skadoodle" Latham, the event's MVP, sold for more than $61,000, according to PC Gamer. Its previous owner had paid $35,000 for it.

Why it became iconic
Three things worked together. The AWP is the sniper rifle players notice in every highlight, and a knotwork dragon painted across the whole gun is hard to miss. The supply was capped early: operation drops ended with Hydra in 2017 and souvenir packages with Boston in 2018, leaving trade-ups as the only way to create new copies. And the souvenirs gave individual copies stories, tied to teams, players and matches.
Later collections added other Covert AWPs that never came from cases, such as the AWP | Medusa from the Gods and Monsters Collection (2015), the AWP | Gungnir from the Norse Collection (2019) and the AWP | Desert Hydra from the 2021 Mirage Collection. The Dragon Lore is the oldest of that group.

What changed in 2026
Two May 2026 changes touch the Dragon Lore directly. First, Souvenir items can now go into trade-up contracts. Their souvenir attributes are stripped and the result is a normal item, so Souvenir Knights can now feed Dragon Lore contracts too.
Second, the IEM Cologne 2026 Major introduced the Souvenir-O-Matic. It lets you take any normal or Souvenir weapon, pick a completed Major match and a player, and permanently turn the weapon into a Souvenir with that match's gold team, autograph and map stickers. Any stickers already on the weapon are removed first.
In other words, a "Souvenir AWP | Dragon Lore" can now be either an original drop from a 2014–2018 Cobblestone package or a 2026 craft. The stickers on the gun tell you which one you are looking at.
Checking a Dragon Lore before you buy
Look at the float first, since the 0.00–0.70 range covers very different-looking copies. For a Souvenir, check the event on the stickers: 2014–2018 Major stickers point to an original package drop, while Cologne 2026 or later stickers point to a Souvenir-O-Matic craft. Then compare recent completed sales rather than asking prices. The guide to reading price history explains how to judge thin markets like this one.
